Tasks:

The details for each task are on the following pages; remember that you need to submit your best four at the end of the trimester.

For tasks that require you to find a text, you CANNOT use texts from the unit material or that you have already used in assessments in this or any other unit (the submission system automatically checks this).

Exception: ALM101 students – you can use the same social media profile/posts for your examples in Task 3, but your analysis must be different.

Task 1 – Semiotics and advertising

Each and every day we encounter hundreds of adverts, signs and symbols – from the very obvious to the very discrete. Copy and paste a visual (still) advertisement into your document (it CANNOT be one used in the unit material), then:

•Using terms, concepts or theory from the textbook and other academic sources, discuss how the advert fits within consumer culture.

•Critically consider what type(s) of ‘myths’ the advert relies upon to be effective, and explain your own ‘reading’ of the text.

(Note, ‘advertisement’ here is very broad – it does not need to be a well-known advert from a professional agency – it can be anything publicly promoting a product, service, event or ideology.)

Task 2 – Ideology

Analyse a feature film or documentary (you CANNOT write about the film Wall-E) and take notes on its ideologies. Then:

•Using terms, concepts or theory from the textbook and other academic sources, summarise what the film is ‘all about’ (its ideological meaning; NOT its plot).
•Distinguish between ‘positive’ and ‘negative’, ‘surface’ and ‘passive’, and ‘dominant’ and ‘subversive’ messages.

Task 3 – Digital media and communicating reality

Analyse your own social media profile and/or history of posts.

•Using screen shots of your examples, academically identify how you have worked to create a specific online identity (i.e. how you have constructed your ‘public’ self).
•Discuss the potential privacy and security implications of your profile/posts.

(Note, it can be any platform that enables a profile or contains a history of posts – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Tinder, Grindr, LinkedIn, etc. – or a combination.)

Task 4 – Gaming

A recent cultural shift has occurred through ‘gamification’ – the introduction of the engaging elements of games into other activities. Gamification is increasingly being used in education, business, health (including physical fitness), marketing, and politics. Select one of these areas, then:

•Using terms, concepts or theory from the textbook and other academic sources, outline (with examples) how gamification has been incorporated into your chosen area.
•Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this type of gamification.

Task 5 – Organisational communication

Consider a time when you have undertaken collaborative teamwork (this could be for study, work, sport, or for social/community projects).

•Drawing from the ‘team roles’ identified by Meredith Belbin (on page 178 of your textbook), outline if and how the people in your team fit into one (or more) of these categories.
•Using terms, concepts or theory from the textbook and other academic sources, discuss the message strategies and behaviours used by different team members to collaborate, and whether or not these were effective.

Task 6 – Non-verbal communication

Find two different images of the same celebrity or public figure, and insert them into your document. (DO NOT use images from when the person appears as a character in films and/or television.) Then:

•Using terms, concepts or theory from the textbook and other academic sources, explain the non-verbal communication cues present in the two images.
•Discuss the meaning behind these cues and how they are symbolically and/or culturally informed.
