Power refers to the ability of a person or group of persons to persuade the beliefs and actions of other person or group of persons. On the other hand, authority refers to the right a person in position hold to exercise discretion in making important decisions.

Power refers to the potential of a person to stimulate others and control their actions whereas authority refers to the legal and formal right to give orders and commands to other people and take important decisions.

Power is considered as the capability to persuade someone to do something that he or she would not have done otherwise. Authority on the other hand, refers to a claim of legality, validation, and the right to exercise some powers.
