You must remember the story, “The Princess and the Pea” where the princess was so sensitive that she always detected when even a single pea gets buried under the stack of mattresses where she used to lay upon.
Likewise, as an editor, you should become like that princess i.e., highly alert and anxious to everything that looks a little odd or off in your article.

Your readers tend to read your essay to see what are your thoughts and what you want to convey.
If you are not able to find out the right word, make use of thesaurus but use it only to remind yourself of the available options. Don’t make the mistake of choosing those words, the implications and usual contexts of which you don’t apprehend. There can be more chances of imprecision if you are using a language to which you are not familiar. It can further lead to readers questioning your ability and expertise.

Find out whether all the words and phrases that you have used in your essay are necessary or they are merely taking up space. Find out whether the sentences that you have used are tight and loud or just dull and boring.
Always remember that there is no need to say something in three sentences that you can easily say in just one sentence. Also, do not use 15 words where only 5 words are enough. Make sure that each word in your essay is adding as much variation and meaning as possible.
For example, if you are using a phrase like, “My own personal opinion”, what is the relevance of “own personal?”

Also, instead of using dull and uninterested words like “says”, you can use believes, acknowledges, argues, suggest, or claims.

When you are revising or re-reading your essay, you may notice that there are some sentences that were required only in the former drafts and they no longer belong to your essay. There can be some sentences that you are very fond of. You might be in a habit of using your favorite sentences even at the places where they don’t belong. Many great writers have a habit of cutting down the brilliant lines if they are not relevant or essential. They are well aware that the readers are less struck by the intelligence than by the incorrectness of the sentences used in the essay and they let these sentences go.
