For the development of information system, there are various steps that are followed one by one to achieve the target. The combination of these steps is considered as system development life cycle. It is necessary to adopt the system development life cycle to implement the system successfully. There are different phases of common system development life cycle such as:

  1. System Study: The very first step in SDLC is the study of the system as in this step, the brief investigation of the system is performed get the picture of a new system that how it will look like. The initial of system development also includes the system proposal in which the objective of the system, problem definition, constraints and benefits of the system are mentioned. It is up to the management to accept or reject the proposal before the actual start of the system development. There are different steps that are considered for the system study phase such as problem identification and project initiation, background analysis and inference or findings.
  2. Feasibility Study: The feasibility study is another step in which the feasibility of the system is checked to make sure the new system is beneficial for the company. The main objective of the feasibility study is not to solve the problems, but it helps in achieving the scope of the system.
  3. Detailed system study: After performing the feasibility study of the system, the next step is to study the system in detail. In a detailed study of the system, the different operations that will be performed by the system will be considered. Along with this, the relationship of these operations will also be considered in this phase. This phase helps in viewing the new problems and issues in the system with new requirements.
  4. System Analysis: The system analysis is the most important phase of the system development life cycle. In this phase, the factual data is collected, and the problems, as well as issues, are identified. The possible, feasible solutions are also provided in this phase to mitigate the issues and make the system better for the company.
  5. System Design: The design of the system is prepared by considering the user requirements and detailed analysis of the system. This is the crucial phase for the development of the system. The system design makes sure that all the requirements of the users and systems are considered in this matter. The logic design which is considered at the time of system analysis is converted into a physical The basic details of the system such as input, output, databases of the system, forms and processing specifications etc. all are considered in this phase.
  6. Coding: After designing the new system, it is necessary to make the system workable, and this can be done by applying coding to make the functions working. This phase is also known as programming phase as in this phase; the programming language is considered to write the codes for the system. The programmer turns the programming codes into computer instructions to make the system work according to the instructions.
  7. Testing: After completing the coding for the system, it is necessary to test the working of the system to check whether the system is working properly or not. For this purpose, the testing phase is considered in the system development life cycle. It is important to perform testing on the system before the implementation. This helps in identifying the issues and problems in the system so that those issues and problems could be mitigated. There are different types of testing methods that can be performed in this phase, such as:
    1. Unit Testing: In the unit testing, every unit developed for the system is tested to identify the issues and problems from the unit. This helps to mitigate the issues in the starting before it becomes a big
    2. Integration Testing: Integration testing is performed after integrating the units of the system to make it whole new system. This helps to specify that all the units of the system are working well together.
  8. Implementation: This is the phase in which the system is implemented after testing and verifying the system. There are various steps that are taken in this phase such as acquisition and installation of hardware and software, conversion, user training and documentation.
  9. Maintenance: The maintenance is the last and important phase of the system development life cycle. In this phase, the system is checked and maintained its working throughout its life. This phase makes sure that the system will meet the scope of any future enhancement and future functionality. In this phase, different elements are reviewed such as reviewing full capabilities of the system, reviewing changes that are required and other requirements to be added and studying the performance of the system.
