ARTICLE: The Concepts of the Production System and its Objectives

The manufacturing organizations take the raw material and then with a series of processes they change that material into a usable product. This process of transforming the inputs in another form with the help of various mechanical as well as chemical processes so that a product with an enhanced quality can be produced. Therefore the production is considered as the method of adding value to the particular material because at every stage of the production process there will be some value addition to the product. This is the process which is responsible for the creation of various products as well as service.

The concept of the Production system

The production system is that function of a company which is responsible for the production of different goods and services. This process entails all the related activities which are required for the creation of a product such as acquiring the raw materials and necessary resources going through a set of procedures which are controlled adequately. This way value can be added to the products as per the guidelines issued by the higher management by keeping the values and vision of the company in mind.

The production system is an essential part of the operations management, and the operations managers manage its methods. You can read about the concept of operations management in the article "The Operations Management And its Role in Business Processes" This article will give you an overview about the functions and the decision making process in the production process.

The production system is divided into several variables

The production system comprises many processes, and these processes should be in particular sequence for maximizing the production quality and output also. The different process under the production system are discussed below:

1. The Inputs

Every manufacturing process needs some inputs which when going through a set of production processes get changed into a valuable product or service. The inputs are those resources which are required to carry out a process so that it can produce the desired output. Primary inputs which are b-necessary for the production system are:

  • The human capital or workers required to a specific tasks
  • The raw material
  • The machines and equipment necessary to carry out the process
  • Relevant information and data
  • The capital

2. The Process of transformation

The transformation process is the method with which the raw material change into a finished good or service. During the process of transformation, the vale is added to the raw material, and its physical and chemical form can be changed into a more useful way which can be used by the customers. The transformation process can take hale of various physical, chemical or mechanical processes which lead to the raw materials change into a useful product. There is a different and detailed process which are involved in the transformation process, and that is:

  • The Product design phase
  • Planning about the procedures to be used
  • The management of control of the production process
  • The maintenance

3. The Outputs

The outputs are the end products of every production process which has to be delivered to the customers> there are two types of outputs which are:

  • The products
  • The services

By production of the products or services the business industry is divided into the manufacturing sector and the service sector. These both types of industries have different production and delivery systems. For example in the manufacturing sector the customers are not involved in the production of the products and the products are tangible in a form which can be touched, seen or felt with senses. Whereas the services can be produced and delivered when the customers are present there. Unlike the products the services cannot be stored for future use, instead, they have to created and used by the customers there and then. Moreover, the servid9ces are intangible, and the customers can only experience them.

4. The control process

The controlling process is related to all the different procedures as the operations managers have to manage and control them at various stages. The primary control process is associated with the following methods:

  • The inventory control
  • The quality control
  • The cost control

The characteristics of the production system

  • The production system has a purpose, and the management should be very clear about that goal. If there will be no clarity of the specifications of the products or the service, then it will be difficult to arrive at the desired output for the organizations.
  • The production is a highly systematic activity where all the process and variable should be ab-available t the production team at the right time and right place.
  • This is the system of changing the materials and inputs into useful products as per the demands of the customers by passing them through various series of sequential methods.
  • The production system operates in congruence with other vital processes of the organization.
  • The managers who manage the production system have to take continuous feedback about their procedures and the quality of the products so that they can bring in required improvement or change in their approach.

The objectives of Production System

The production system has a very precise goal which is required by the organizations to enhance their productivity, quality of the outcome and the efficiency of the processes. The managers have to take necessary decisions to carry out all the operations effectively so that they can meet the expectations of the management as well as of the customers. Primary objectives of the production system are written as below:

  • Maintaining the desired quality

We can measure the standard of the quality of a product by comparing its features and usability with the features demanded and expected by the customers. The right quality of a good may not be necessarily its best quality but should be preferably meet the customer's requirements.

  • Producing the right quantity

It is highly essential that the organizations produce their products in an optimum quantity. Having the correct number of manufactured goods is a critical aspect for the success of any company. They should neither produce in more than demand and not it should be less than the requirement as per the market. If the company produces more products than their need then they have to store in the inventory and with storage for a more extended period, it can diminish the quality or functioning of the products.

  • Producing the goods or services at the right time

It is very vital to keep track of the time when producing the goods or services. Whether it is about the time of getting the raw material from the suppliers or the time of delivering the finished product to the customers, it has to exact so that other processes do not hamper due to unavailability of the inputs at the right time.

Controlling the manufacturing cost

The organizations have to establish the manufacturing cost a way before the production process starts. It is usually a higher management decision, and it should be taken very thoughtfully. When the managers have asset amount of cost which they can spend over the production process, then they can keep their expenditure in track by trying to cut expenses wherever possible. This helps the companies a lot to maintain the right cost for their products which can help them while setting the right prices when they have to market their product or service once it is produced. By taking the right decision about the cost of the whole production process, the companies can make a suitable strategy to promote their product according to its features and the functions.
